Treatment of facial rhytids (wrinkles) with BOTOX® Cosmetic has become the most common nonsurgical cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. In 2002, the FDA approved the use of BOTOX® to treat the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows that often make people look chronically tired, angry or upset. It is also effective in treating the “crow’s feet” wrinkles around the eyes and other unpleasant facial wrinkles.
BOTOX® was first studied in the 1960’s for treatment of certain neurological disorders. In addition to its success in treating facial wrinkles, it is also approved for the treatment of strabismus, blepharospasm, cervical dystonia and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Additionally, recent studies have demonstrated that BOTOX® is effective in controlling the severity and frequency of migraine headaches. BOTOX® works by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in muscle contractions. The effect of BOTOX® can be seen in 3-5 days and results usually last for 3-6 months.
BOTOX® has proven to be a safe alternative to surgery for mild to moderate facial wrinkles. Its use has been evaluated in more than 200 scientific studies, and over 1 million patients have been treated in the past 10 years. To date, there have been no documented systemic complications associated with its use. The success of BOTOX® is a testament of its ability to safely provide reliable cosmetic results for patients who are not ready for more invasive facial cosmetic surgery.
